Summary:

Ageing is linked with certain alterations in the immune system that may lead to increased susceptibility to various diseases, including cancer. The interplay between ageing and cancer immunology has garnered significant attention in recent years, with implications for the development and efficacy of immunotherapeutic approaches. This special issue will provide an overview of the complex relationship between ageing and cancer immunology, highlighting key mechanisms such as immunosenescence, inflammageing, and alterations in the tumor microenvironment. Moreover, it will explore the impact of age-related changes on the effectiveness of cancer immunotherapy, including immune checkpoint inhibitors, adoptive cell therapy, and cancer vaccines. While ageing presents challenges for immune surveillance and anti-tumor immunity, it also offers opportunities for targeted interventions tailored to the unique immunological landscape of older individuals. Understanding the complex dynamics of ageing and cancer immunology is essential for optimizing immunotherapeutic strategies and improving outcomes for elderly cancer patients.

Keywords: ageing; cancer; anti-tumor immunity; cancer immunotherapy; immunosenescence
